NASA's proposed $14 billion budget is a 3 percent increase over the $13.6 billion the space agency received in 1999.
In this year's budget request:
- $5.5 billion for human spaceflight, up from $5.4 billion last year.
- Of that, $2.1 billion is set aside for the International Space Station and $3.1 billion for the space shuttle fleet.
- Included in the space station's portion is $300 million for Russia, up from $200 million last year.
- Part of the space shuttle's portion is $256 million allotted to safely operate the fleet. That's up from $162 million from last year.
- $2.4 billion for space science, up from $2.1 billion last year. The figure includes $940 million for new technologies to explore the solar system.
- $1.19 billion for aerospace technology. Included in that is $290 million toward a five-year, $4.5 billion Space Launch Initiative to allow NASA to fly humans safely aboard low-cost, commercial spacecraft. That's up from $183 million spent last year on space transportation.
