WASHINGTON (States News Service) -- The head of the House space committee lashed out at President Clinton, the aerospace industry, and members of his own party today for contributing to national security problems with China.
"Some people are making hundreds of millions of dollars trading with Communist China," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-California). "It's not my job to watch out for the good of a few corporate individuals. It's my job to look out for the good of America."
Rohrabacher spoke at the quarterly meeting of the Aerospace States Association, and suggested that those pushing for looser export controls for aerospace should "take Communist China out of the equation."
Calling yesterday's indictment against Boeing subsidiary McDonnell Douglas "predictable," Rohrabacher said he has come across repeated evidence that American aerospace companies have sent technical help to Chinese military centers.
"Over the last five years, the major aerospace companies have transferred technology to Communist China," Rohrabacher said. "We didn't need that story yesterday to help us understand that."
China, the last major communist power, is the United States' most likely opponent in any possible large-scale war in the next twenty years, Rohrabacher said.
"There are so many complicating factors with China," Rohrabacher said. "It's no secret that this administration has a special relationship with China... there were (lots) of bucks funneled into this President's reelection campaign from Communist China officials, that's a fact."
Rohrabacher also was careful to note that many of his GOP colleagues have also repeatedly voted to give China "most-favored-nation" trading status. He said many of them have "big corporate backers" for their campaigns, and are voting to benefit them.
