Back to the Moon
Vote here for the top space story of 2006. First up is NASA’s plan to return astronauts to the Moon by 2020, which took major steps forward. The crew and cargo rockets got their names, Ares I and Ares V, as did the spacecraft itself—Orion—as NASA tapped Lockheed Martin to build the capsule-based vehicle. A vanguard of unmanned lunar probes is planned, though studies dampened hopes that frozen water may await future Moon-bound astronauts.
