The transit of Venus is progressing smoothly, with Venus midway through its path across the sun.

The total transit will last about 6 hours and 40 minutes.

Venus Transit of 2012 is Coming!

One of the rarest skywatching events that can ever be seen will occur on June 5 and 6 this year, when the planet Venus will cross the face of the sun, as seen from Earth, in what scientists call a transit.

The Venus transit of 2012 is the second of two in recent years (the last one occured in 2004), but is the last event of its kind until 2117!

SPACE.com will offer complete coverage of the Venus transit of 2012 here over the next two months, culminating in the skywatching event of the year!
