After issuing these instructions, the nanny -- in reality a sophisticated holographic projection -- disappears.
Alienated abductee
Liam visits Eva in the hospital. She tells him that her father leaks intelligence information to the Volunteers, and she was actually in Palestine to warn a Resistance cell the Senator targeted.
She claims not to remember her disappearance, but when Liam shows her a vial of kryss, it triggers a flashback to her abduction by Volunteers.
They took her into space. She draws Liam a sketch of the place she was taken, but the senator's arrival cuts the conversation short. Liam leaves with the sketch.
Let's make a dealer
Liam and Renee realize Eva was aboard the Freedom space station, which had been slated for scrap until Senator Gale lobbied to have it sold to Mikhail Federov of Rostok.
Renee visits Federov on the station, which he is using as a Volunteer training facility. He gives the usual publicity tour, but excuses himself after receiving a call from an incoming shuttle. Thinking fast, Renee uses her global to record his keypad access code.
Federov opens a safe in his office and removes a sample of kryss. In charming broken English, he informs his visitor that his "price to cater to your cravings must double." The visitor -- a jonesing Taelon -- agrees, and receives a sprinkling of the drug.
Knowledge is power
Renee and Liam conclude that Federov is using the Volunteer training facility as a cover for some even more despicable enterprise. They widen their surveillance to include Michael Flannery, the shuttle pilot who arrived during Renee's visit.
Renee plans to sneak back aboard Freedom under a manufactured Volunteer identity. Liam asks her to wait until he meets with J Street and locates evidence corroborating Eva's story.
Liam portals to the Fringes -- isn't it amazing that society's outcasts have their own portal access? -- and locates the talented Miss Street. She demands Liam's spiffy-keen jacket in exchange for fingering one Lucas Walker, formerly a member of the Palestine Resistance cell, now a Detroit sanitation engineer.
Shortly thereafter, Liam visits Eva in the hospital and tells her that Lucas Walker corroborated her story. As Liam talks to her, she suffers a flashback to her experience as a kryss slave.
The doctor arrives just as Eva tells Liam that shuttle pilot Flannery was responsible for her abduction. Visiting hours are over.
Searching for clues
Having been ejected forcibly from the hospital, Liam goes to confront Senator Gale about the kryss farm, but the good senator denies knowing anything about Federov's activities aboard the station.
Renee goes undercover aboard Freedom Station, using Federov's access code to sneak into a restricted area. She finds the kryss slaves' barracks and records Volunteers harvesting the substance from the slaves' bodies.
She tails Federov and records him conducting a kryss transaction with Da'an, of all people. The Companion catches her spying on them. Federov sounds the alarm.
Renee shoots her way through the station and escapes through the portal. Before transporting out, she disables the portal's control console.
Later, she shows Liam the recording of Da'an dosing himself with kryss. The Companion is taking more than the 10-milligram daily dose the Taelons require for survival.
Da'an hits rock bottom
Liam confronts Da'an, who appears distressed and paranoid, about his kryss abuse and demands to know why Federov is supplementing his dosage.
When Da'an refuses to explain, Liam threatens to report him to Zo'or. Da'an collapses. Liam calls Renee and tells her to summon Doctor Curzon.
Helping those who can't help themselves
Meanwhile, the wily Sandoval calls Federov on the carpet for using the high-profile Eva Gale as a kryss slave. Thanks to this gaffe, the Senator's loyalty may be in question.
A hospital orderly checks on Eva, but finds a pillow dummy in her bed. The real Eva attacks from behind, steals the orderly's clothes and escapes the hospital.
Liam tells Renee that Da'an suffered a toxic reaction to his kryss overdose. Fortunately, Doctor Curzon formulated a synthetic kryss without the toxic side effect.
Eva calls to tell Liam she's escaped, and now fears she's being followed. The transmission is sketchy but Liam is still able to track her signal to the Fringes.
Just as Liam arrives with Renee and J Street in tow, Eva's pursuers catch up with her. Our heroes open fire, forcing the would-be abductors to leave the girl behind.
12-Step Taelon
Liam once again confronts Da'an about his kryss abuse. The Taelon explains that he was conducting an experiment to see whether large amounts of kryss could supplement Taelon energy levels, thereby preserving their core energy supply.
Liam announces that Da'an is an addict. Giving the Taelon a dose of Doctor Curzon's synthetic kryss, he warns the alien, "The only way you're going to save yourself is if you never use real kryss again."
The sting
Renee returns to Freedom station, sneaking into Federov's office to plant a small device on his control console.
Sandoval arrives on Freedom, claiming to have received an urgent message to meet Federov there. Renee strolls in, apparently having scheduled a similar meeting.
Renee triggers the device she planted in Federov's office. An emergency alarm sounds. Federov and Sandoval run for the safety of the office, where Sandoval finds Federov's kryss stockpile and a lot of gold, which he recognizes the gold as coming from Zo'or's personal supply.
Things look bleak for Federov, but he maintains the presence of mind (or sense of humor) to offer Sandoval a bribe.
Cat's in the cradle
Eva and Liam visit Senator Gale. Liam tells Gale that Federov confessed to running the kryss facility and to paying off the senator. Bank records implicate him in Federov's scheme, and he should be taken into custody soon.
Liam leaves Eva and her father to make some sort of peace.
What's known as an enabler
Sandoval visits Da'an and offers him dose of real kryss, "not that pitiful substitute created by Doctor Curzon."
Da'an begs Sandoval to take away the real kryss. The agent doesn't move. Da'an turns toward him. Whether or not he chooses to accept Sandoval's offer remains open to interpretation.
